The Department of Neuroscience and Neurorehabilitation at IRCCS San Raffaele in Rome integrates clinical and pre-clinical research expertise. At the facility at Via della Pisana 235 in Rome there are 3 neuromotor rehabilitation wards with a total of 156 inpatient beds in Code 56. Neurologically derived Patients account for the majority of cases for a total approaching 800 units/year. They suffered mostly from severe cerebrovascular accidents, but a number of other acute-onset neurological conditions (e.g., encephalitis, myelitis, polyradiculoneuritis) and neurosurgical and post-traumatic conditions are also represented. In rare cases, Patients with severe flare-ups of existing neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis are admitted. However, neurodegenerative diseases vengnon mostly reblogged within repeat admissions at a Day Hospital. The facility is also equipped with a very active pediatric nector with 10 inpatient beds, Day Hospital and outpatient clinics for rehabilitation of the most important neurodevelopmental disorders, The Radiology and Neuroimaging Service consists of a traditional radiology, a 3 Tesla MRI and a 1.5 Tesla MRI, and a state-of-the-art ultrafast CT scan. There is a Clinical Neurophysiology Service that performs EEG, 24-hour EEG Holter, Electromyography, Electroneurography, Reflex Study, Evoked Potentials (Visual, Somatosensory and Motor); equipment includes two transcranial magnetic stimulators for single stimulation, double stimulation and repetitive stimulation. The Neuropsychology Service performs the whole battery of testsneurocognitive, for the study of higher cortical function and epr attention disorders. Finally, the Center is equipped with gaitanalysis equipment for the study of gait and also movement of upper limb segments through an integrated system of 8 cameras with sensors applied to the most important repere points for kinematic analysis and with surface EMG.

The rehabilitation facilities consist of a well-equipped traditional gymnasium and a state-of-the-art robotic gymnasium equipped with the latest technology for cognitive, limb/hand, and gait and balance rehabilitation.

Several projects are underway at this facility concerning innovative methods for the rehabilitation and prognosis of stroke (Previctus, Cervical Stimulation with low-intensity currents), Alzheimer’s dementia (AI-MIND), Parkinson’s disease, and headaches.

The Clinical Trial Center manages and coordinates numerous experimental protocols for innovative cre of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders and for Headaches.
