TheOperating Unit of Medicine, accredited with the National Health System, operates within the Department of Internal, Motor and Sensory Sciences and is oriented toward the diagnosis and treatment of acute diseases. It also has ordinary inpatient beds.
Critically ill and clinically unstable patients come from the Territory Emergency and Acceptance Departments, Rehabilitation Operating Units and the home.
The diseases that are most frequently treated are cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and pulmonary. In addition, there is a digestive videoendoscopy service for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases (average hospital stay is about five days). Care and treatment activities are integrated with clinical research activities.
