Multidisciplinarity

The Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Research Center ensures multidisciplinary care and specific clinical expertise in order to carry out proper management of the disease, especially in its more advanced stages, when conventional drug therapy can no longer guarantee an acceptable quality of life.

St. Raphael Network

The Center is part of the Parkinson’s network of San Raffaele S.p.A. facilities and is in direct connection with other specialized national and international centers with which research protocols in rehabilitation are carried out.
The Parkinson’s Research Center’s close collaboration with the SR Cassino Operating Units enables the management of patients with Parkinson’s Disease in complicated stages, ensuring:

Assistance:
o Outpatient neurological examinations
o Ordinary and DH admissions
o Advanced phase therapies (DBS, Apomorphine, Duodopa)
o Movement Analysis Laboratory – Gait Analysis
o Instrumental and radiological diagnostics
o Laboratory of Neurophysiopathology
o Outpatient Neuropsychology Clinic
o Multidisciplinary consultations

Scientific research:
o Clinical Trial Center: a center of international significance recognized as a “top recruiter” by numerous pharmaceutical companies, an industry leader in clinical research of neurodegenerative diseases. The group employs a multidisciplinary team of experts who, in line with the mission of Gruppo San Raffaele S.p.A, are the interlocutor for commercial and academic sponsors who recognize in the CTC of San Raffaele Cassino, a partner of excellence for the testing of new drug therapies of new molecules for the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson’s Disease and new disease-modifying drugs, aimed at delaying/slowing the progression of the disease by intervening on the biological causes of Parkinson’s.
o Clinical Research Center: extensive research activity is directed toward identifying rehabilitative exercise programs that induce neuroplasticity phenomena (the ability of the nervous system to adapt its structure in response to a variety of factors and internal or external stimuli) and is the central element of rehabilitation. Clinical investigations of robot-assisted rehabilitation using exoskeletons (“ALEx RS Bimanual,” an innovative bimanual exoskeleton for the upper limb) and end-effector devices for the upper limb (“Motor”) and a state-of-the-art treadmill with an anti-gravity system that through an innovative interface, enables postural and gait reeducation aimed at compensating for movement disorders, typical of Parkinson’s Disease.

Toward the future

SR Cassino’s Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Research Center is looking to the future: they are in the process of defining Telemedicine programs, or the set of medical and information technology techniques that allow a patient to be treated at a distance or more generally to provide health services at a distance. With this in mind, more and more attention is being paid to Telerehabilitation, which is the branch of telemedicine that deals with the delivery of rehabilitation services through telecommunication networks and the Internet.
